Here’s why we don’t like making New Year’s resolutions come January

Babes, we hate to break it to you, but 2019 is basically here so you’ll be seeing a whole lotta #NewYearNewMe posts on Insta with pledges to get fit and eat clean. While wanting to work on yourself is great, we’re not a fan of NY resolutions. Why? Because 80 per cent of these fail by Feb – isn’t that ridic?! But it ain’t that surprising. We all want to begin afresh come January, but our resolutions to read more or scroll less don’t last long. Instead, try creating short and long-term goals to make your year ~fire~.

WHERE TO START

Now is a great time to consider what you’d like to achieve in 2019 – this could be as simple as taking up a new sport, or giving up that chocolate before bed. Or they could be huge ones, like landing that dream gig. Write all your intentions down (they don’t all have to relate to just next year – think big, babe!) Once you’ve written your list, place each one into either the short-term or long-term column.

SHORT-TERM GOALS

Short-term goals can usually be achieved in less than a year and be big or small. They can range from making self-care a priority, to making time to journal every day. These can also be stepping stones to long-term goals. For example, if your long-term objective is to buy a car, a short-term goal could be to get a part-time job so you can start saving.

LONG-TERM GOALS

It might sound obvious, but long-term goals usually take longer than a year to accomplish. Start to think big picture – such as getting into uni, planning an overseas holiday or starting your own business. While these goals might seem far away, it’s good to have something to strive for. Break them into smaller tasks so you don’t feel overwhelmed and to stay motivated.

VISION BOARDS

It might not seem legit, but vision boards help you visually imagine what you want your future to look like, which is pretty powerful. And they’re super easy to make! All you need is a corkboard or piece of cardboard. Then grab a bunch of your fave mags (hello, GF!) and cut out anything that inspires you or fits in with your goals and stick it to your board. It’s handy to add pictures of your loved ones, also. Stick it above your bed as a reminder of what you’re working towards. It looks cute, too!

GO WITH THE FLOW

Just because you’ve written down your goals doesn’t mean you’re stuck with these forever. As you change as a person, feel free to alter them! And if you fail along the way, don’t let it get you down, girl. Try to get back on track and keep pushing forward.

TREAT YO SELF

When you achieve any of your goals, make sure to celebrate! It’s important to give yourself a pat on the back (or buy yourself a lil pressie!) when you’ve accomplished something big, as this will keep you motivated. Yay you!

YOU DO YOU

A new year is a good time to take stock of where you’re heading, but remember you don’t need to create a new ‘version’ of yourself. You’re pretty damn great as you are. Try to stick to goals that make you happier or healthier in the long run. You got this!
