If you’re obsessed with MTV’s Catfish like us, you’ll know how messed up things can get online and unfortunately for Makaia Carr, she found out firsthand just how creepy catfishing can get.
The popular fitness blogger and mum-of-two from New Zealand recently discovered that some random had stolen her entire identity from social media and convinced an American guy that she was her for the past seven years. SEVEN!
Earlier this week, Makaia took to Facebook to let everyone know about the creepy situation she’d found herself in and it’s since gone viral.
“I was contacted by a guy in America today who thought he was talking to me online for well over a year and forming a relationship,” she wrote. “He started to suspect something late last year and found out there was a woman in Auckland pretending to be me.
Makaia even shared screenshots of text message conversations the guy was having with the girl posing as her and it’s creep central!
The girl even used photos of Makaia’s friends and made up names for each of them! Yeah, NEXT level!
“It has been quite an emotional roller coaster really. It has given me a little bit of fear online and you start to second guess what you do on social media,” she dished to the Daily Mail. “Since finding out and reading some of the messages you feel quite sick about the dirty lie.”
“I found the woman on LinkedIn and my friend messaged her,” Makaia added. “She replied with an apology saying that she knew what she did was wrong and was seeking help.”
The American guy, who turns out is a professional boxer, is obviously also pretty shaken up about the whole thing. He told Stuff that he’s been in contact with the girl on-and-off since 2010 and he only realised something was fishy recently.
Apparently he figured it out after the girl sent him photos of Makaia at a boxing match. When he asked for a video of the fight, she said it wasn’t recorded but then he discovered the clip on YouTube and people were screaming Makaia’s name.
He then contacted the blogger to let her know what was going on.
“Initially I was absolutely p***ed off she’d chosen me to do this with,” Makaia continued. “But then I saw her own pictures on Facebook with her family and thought she must be in a bad place. But the guy she was talking to still seems pretty p***ed.”
