Here, we chat to Nat about all things confidence.
You exude confidence on camera, but have you always been comfortable in your own skin?
When I was younger, I didn’t really think much about what I looked like. Then, I started modelling and it taught me about the other side of being a girl. It’s really hard in the industry when you’re surrounded by people who are all talking about their flaws. It kind of makes you feel like you need to talk about yours, too. As a young model, that was one of the biggest challenges, because it’s a connection thing. It’s a way that you could talk to these other girls.
How did you get over that?
It wasn’t until I was about 20 and I was at a beauty pageant in Fiji and this girl complimented me. She said, “You look so beautiful in that.” My immediate reaction was what I’d always been taught – to shy away from compliments. The amazing thing about her is that when I complimented her, she came back to me with, “Thank you so much. That means so much to me.” Hearing somebody do that opened my eyes to the fact that if somebody likes your dress or shoes, it’s OK to accept the compliment rather than being like, ‘these old things’ and bringing yourself down. That’s my biggest confidence tip, to learn to accept compliments.
How do you give yourself a confidence boost when you’re about to get in front of the camera?
I think music is a really powerful tool for confidence. Putting on some tunes in hair and makeup helps me feel relaxed and comfortable. It kind of depends on the vibe of the shoot, but if I’m doing a fun, happy shoot, then I’ve got to have a little bit of Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez playing. Poppy songs that I can sing along to that create a good, high-energy vibe.
Who are your biggest role models when it comes to confidence?
I really love Margot Robbie. I think she has this air of confidence, and the fact that she opened her own production company so she could show the world her talent is just amazing. She has so much self-belief and refuses to let herself be kept down by the Australian tall poppy syndrome!
When do you feel the most confident?
When I’m 100 per cent my dorky self.
