According to Deadline, Supergirl, which stars Melissa Benoist as the titular character, will end with its sixth season. The decision comes following a sudden decline in ratings, leading The CW, Warner Bros TV and Berlanti Productions to make a longer final season to help wrap everything up—a whopping 20 episodes!
As per the report, the series is supposedly going to begin filming in Vancouver on Monday, the 28th of September, The show will film around Benoist's scenes—she is currently pregnant with her first child and will join the production later.
The final season of Supergirl will premiere in 2021.
In an Instagram post looking back on the last five years of superhero action, Melissa said, “to say it has been an honour portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement.”
“Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless,” she continued. “She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united.
“What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful. I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”
Supergirl is the second series in the Arrowverse to end, following the original flagship TV show Arrow which ended its eighth and last season last year. Going forward, that means that the DC Universe TV series will carry on with The Flash, Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Titans and Doom Patrol, as well as the new series Superman & Lois. It’s unclear whether Melissa’s character will appear in the later or in other Arrowverse crossovers, but when Girlfriend know, you'll know.
