As of right now, plot details are quite tight but, according to Hollywood Reporter, the story is a modern reimagining of the traditional fairy tale about an orphaned girl with an evil stepmother, but now told as a musical.
Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming new fairy tale classic.
The cast of James Corden’s Cinderella remake
Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Camila Cabello is set to make her feature-length acting debut as the titular character, Cinderella. Cabello is also said to be “integrally involved in the music for the film,” according to Hollywood Reporter.
Speaking to Variety, Cabello said, “playing Cinderella is like a dream come true for me… Anyone who knows me, knows I’m obsessed with musicals. I’m obsessed with Disney, like, I literally know the soundtrack to every princess movie ever made.”
Pose star Billy Porter is said to star as a genderless Fairy Godmother called Fab G.
In an interview with CBS, the Emmy-nominated actor said, “It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother—they call it the Fab G. Magic has no gender."
"We are presenting this character as genderless—at least that's how I'm playing it. And it's really powerful."
In Cinderella, Idina Menzel will play the Evil Stepmother.
Menzel is perhaps best known on Broadway for her original role as Elphaba in Wicked, but has also starred in Glee, Rent and the voice of Elsa in Frozen.
Londoner Nicholas Galitzine is Cinderella’s love interest, Prince Robert, who, Deadline adds, will be an updated version of the original tale’s Prince Charming.
Galitzine previously starred in Netflix’s Chambers, as a man struggling to deal with the loss of his brother.
Pierce Brosnan will play the King and father to Prince Robert.
From Netflix’s Eurovision to Mamma Mia, Brosnan is no stranger to musicals, although it’s unclear whether his character will sing and if so, about what.
Oscar and Golden Globe-nominee actress Minnie Driver will star as Queen Beatrice.
Driver has previously starred in Phantom of the Opera, Good Will Hunting and Grosse Pointe Blank.
Maddie Baillio will play one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, Anastasia.
She’s best known for her role as Millie Michalchuck in Netflix’s Dumplin, but also starred as Tracy Turnblad in a 2016 production of Hairspray Live!
Charlotte Spencer will portray the other stepsister in the family, Drizella.
Spencer previously starred in The Living and the Dead and voiced Angelina in the Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps series.
Romesh Ranganathan, James Corden and John Mulaney
The three comedians—Romesh Ranganathan, James Corden and John Mulaney—will star as the mice turned footmen.
Ranganath is known for his deadpan comedy in British standup.
Corden is both the producer of the Cinderella film and the host of The Late-Late Show with James Corden,” as well as starring in musicals Cats and Into the Woods.
Meanwhile Mulaney is a comedy veteran, starting his career as a writer for Saturday Night Live and voicing roles in Big Mouth and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Is it related to Disney?
The upcoming Cinderella film is actually not a Disney live action film like Mulan or Aladdin. Instead, it’s being produced by Sony.
When is Cinderella coming out?
According to CNN, Cinderella, starring Camila Cabello, is expected to release on the 5th of February 2021.
