Winter is hard enough at the best of times, but this year, we’re going to have to dig even deeper to keep our skin – and our spirits – glowing. As any fake tan lover will tell you, getting a healthy (sunless) glow can work wonders on your skin and also give you a little mental pep. And let’s be honest, we need all the help we can get right now!
In winter, #iso or not, there are some key things you can do to ensure you get the best out of your fake tan – so even though you haven’t just returned from a European summer, you can still look like you have.
1. Exfoliate
Exfoliation is the real MVP when it comes to fake tan prep, and in winter even more so. Skin becomes drier due to the cold weather and air-conditioning, so make sure you exfoliate twice a week to slough away any build-up (and at least 24 hours before applying tanner).
2. Moisturise
Moisturiser is your other best friend when it comes to fake tan. You should be lathering it on daily (if not twice a day) to keep skin hydrated and fresh, and to help tan last longer (and fade evenly). Opt for a gentle moisturiser without harsh chemicals to ensure you don’t strip or alter the colour.
3. Lighten up your colour
In the cooler months, less is more when it comes to your fake tan. Aim for a subtle healthy glow rather than two weeks in Greece (*sigh). We recommend applying just one coat of colour, or using a lighter shade than you normally would. Our favourite? The TANNED Australia Clear And Clean Tanning Gel.
4. Gradual tan
Gradual tan is perfect for the cooler months as it gives a subtle glow and is easy to apply – simply pop it on and you’re good to go about your day while it works its magic. Gradual tan is also great for topping up your tan throughout the week to give your colour a boost.
5. Invest in a good mitt
Gone are the days where you have to hide your orange stained hands after applying your tan – mitts are your secret weapon for keeping them stain-free, as well as ensuring your tan goes on evenly and streak-free. Buy a mitt, you won’t regret it.
6. Experiment
If you’ve always used one type of tan, winter is the perfect time to try a different formulation. Oil and cream tans are great for cooler weather as they have the benefit of added hydration and leave the skin feeling nourished and dewy.
7. Fake it one step further
If you can’t be bothered tanning but you still want a glow, why not just tan your face (don’t forget to follow the colour down your neck and keep the colour light). You can then hide your legs and arms under cosy knits and pants.
8. Glow from within
Keeping your skin healthy from within is key. Drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet and exercising will help it to stay hydrated, flush out toxins and keep it looking clear and fresh all year long.
