SHOCKING NEWS: Kim Kardashian has offended people with some good old cultural appropriation.
While attending the MTV Awards yesterday, Kim caused a stir with her ‘cornrows’, traditionally known as Fulani braids.
This traditional hairstyle is native to African American people, who have in the past called Kim out for doing this exact same thing.
When Kim previously wore her hair like this, she called out Bo Derek’s iconic look as inspo, writing, “Bo West”.
Followers quickly called her out, because before Derek wore Fulani braids for her 1979 film debut in 10, black women had been wearing their hair in that style for many generations.
“You and your sisters make it a habit to appropriate and accessorise blackness while simultaneously working overtime to erase the very black women you spend a fortune trying to emulate,” Monique Judge wrote at The Grapevine.
Kim responded to the hate at the time by posting another image of herself with the hair, writing, “Hi, can I get zero f-s please, thanks.”
Derek defended Kim at the time, tweeting, “It’s just a hairstyle”.
While Kim received backlash again for wearing her hair in braids at the Awards show, many people also accused her of doing it to steal attention off frenemy Beyonce, who just dropped an album with her husband Jay Z earlier that day. Or maybe she was paying homage to Bey, calling the hairstyle “Lemonade braids”.
Whatever the case, Kim has made it perfectly clear that she likes this hairstyle and will continue to wear it, regardless of the backlash.
