Controversial makeup mogul Jeffree Star has apologised after a photo resurfaced featuring him and a series of offensive Nazi symbolism.
In the midst of allegations that he and Shane Dawson orchestrated Beauty YouTube’s infamous Dramaggedon feud in 2019 between James Charles and Tati Westwood, and treated Lester Kameron as a “token black kid,” photos resurfaced of Star’s face on an image allegedly selling a “Nazi Lipstick.”
The screenshot, which was taken from a video claiming to have exposed the Cremated makeup moghul’s past, shows Jeffree Star next to a series of reversed swastikas and nazi symbols, and the url “lipsticknazi.com.”
Star confirmed the post was real and taken in 2004, but stressed that it was used to refer to the alleged “slang term” use of Nazi in the 2000s. Even still, while it may have been “just a dumb splash page,” and wasn’t actually a product he was selling, it was still a “very dumb decision I made made when I was very young.”
“I created a URL called LipstickNazi.com.,” he explained on Instagram Stories, according to Cosmopolitan. “Now, back then in the early 2000s, it was a slang term, like on the show Seinfeld someone was a ‘soup Nazi’ if you were a crazy cook. I used to work at the MAC counter, if you were someone that used to follow customers around in the store, you were called a ‘door Nazi.’”
“So, the term ‘lipstick Nazi’ is disgusting and I just want people to know, looking at me, it’s wrong and I should never have used it.”
Now, we shouldn’t have to explain why this is problematic but… just don’t ever use Nazi symbolism, okay?
Anyway, in a weird apology statement, Star says that the name was allegedly part of his LiveJournal profile when he was young, where he was “going to have the website be a bunch of f**king crazy pictures” of himself, and that, ultimately, people shouldn’t be trying to turn this into “a smear campaign.”
“But, for anyone to try to create a smear campaign saying that [the image] was a makeup brand is completely false and I get what a few of you out there are trying to do, but no,” he said. “I never created a makeup company, obviously.”
“There are no products, literally nothing but a dumb splash page, which I will forever be sorry for creating. Now, when I launched that single page, that same week it really did not sit well with me even back then. I dissolved all the site, I never launched it and it was literally nothing.”
“The term is wrong, it’s derogatory, it’s vile, it’s disgusting and I should have never used it,” he concludes. “No excuses ever, but I want to let you [know] the context of that and it was a slang term that I used. That ‘lipstick Nazi’ was for people who were like obsessed with makeup.”
“Horrible decision. It was very wrong of me and for anyone who has seen that I’m deeply sorry. I’m disgusted with myself and I never should have used that word, ever.”
