How To Recreate Girlfriend’s Launch Video Hair Looks

From modern waves to romantic curls, here’s how to nail great everyday hair

When it comes to hair, our general day-to-day philosophy is the simpler and the easier the better. Sure, we can spend as much time as we want saving inspiration pictures to our “Hair” Pinterest boards and try to follow along with TikTok hair tutorials, but at the end of the day, we’re going to pick something achievable over an elaborate up-do that’d take us at least two hours on our best attempt.

For the hairstyles that our models wore during the Girlfriend launch shoot, we followed the same mindset. Think simple techniques, a few carefully selected hair products and tools, and styles that are able to work across a couple different hair lengths and textures. The three looks featured include sleek and gentle waves, tousled lengths and texture, and defrizzed and defined curls.

Hair shouldn’t be a hassle, nor do you wanna end up looking like a complete stranger! Below, we take you through how to achieve the three different hairstyles and our John Frieda product recommendations that’ll make getting the look even easier.

Look one: sleek and gentle modern waves

1. On damp hair, run a smoothing styling product from the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair. We like the John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Curl Defining Crème for this. It’s very lightweight and nourishing, as well as featuring a fancy technology called StyleFlex™ that smoothes and helps define your natural curls without leaving your hair crunchy. FYI, this product is made for natural curls as opposed to styled curls, however, it can be used on all levels of frizz.

2. Gently curl sections of your hair into loose spirals with your fingers and blow-dry on a low heat setting.

3. Rake your fingers through the hair around the crown of your head whilst blow-drying to add a little bit of volume there, but not too much.

4. Using a curling iron with a medium-sized barrel, go through your hair again and very gently curl pieces of your hair. A couple of key tips here: don’t close the barrel all the way on the hair, and focus more so on the middle of your hair, as opposed to curling the roots or the ends. This leaves you with a really fresh, modern wave in your hair as opposed to stiff ringlets.

5. Pass over the ends of your hair with the curling iron. Go lightly though, we still want them looking a little undone.

6. Gently shake the wave in your hair out and arrange them how you’d like. Our stylist did a tiny bit of backcombing on our model.

7. Finally, complete the look with a little bit of finishing cream. We like the John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Finishing Crème, which has nourishing avocado oil to help replace natural oils that we normally lose because of hairstyling and environmental damage. Consider these your anti-frizz powerhouses!

Look two: romantic, tousled lengths and texture

John Frieda

1. If you have really soft, healthy hair that’s never been colour treated before—first of all, lucky you! One downside to super healthy hair is that it can be a little difficult to style because of how slippery it can be. If this is you, start by running a styling product from roots to ends on damp hair that will add a bit of texture and hold to your hair.

2. After that, blow dry the product in gently but make sure your hair is still damp. We like the John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Curl Defining Crème for this.

3. Once your hair has a little bit more grip and will be easier to style, section and begin curling it around a curling wand with a medium-sized barrel. This time you can close the barrel around your hair, as we’re going for a more defined curl than in the first look.

4. After leaving your hair in place to cool down for a minute or two after using the curling iron, gently brush it out.

5. Once that’s done, gently run a tiny bit of finishing product through the lengths of your hair to add shine and smooth down any frizz. We really like the John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Finishing Crème.

Look three: defrizzed and defined curls

1. This final look was all about working with our model’s beautiful natural hair texture: big on frizz-free volume and defined curls. Curly hair, by its nature, tends to be a little drier than straight or wavy hair. This is partly because our scalp’s natural oils have a harder time making their way down curly hair strands, which means they don’t get those inbuilt moisturisers.

2. Start with wet hair, and if your hair is getting dry, give it a solid misting with some water from a spray bottle.

3. On your wet hair, apply a generous amount of smoothing and curl defining product. We’re big fans of the John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Serum which also repels humidity—an essential consideration as the weather gets warmer. The blend of silicones and bamboo extract also helps to make your hair a lot more manageable, excellent if you have very thick, wavy or curly hair.

4. Using a blowdryer with a diffuser attachment and making sure you’re on a gentle setting, blowdry your hair until it’s no longer damp. If you felt like it, you could totally stop here and call it a day with your now-defrizzed curls!

5. If you want to add a little something extra, use a few spritzes of styling spray with a gentle hold on one of your curls, before wrapping it around a curling iron. You want to follow the natural direction and curl of your hair here, all we want to do is add a bit of extra definition to some curls and make sure they don’t frizz out.

The John Frieda Frizz Ease 3 Day Straight Semi-Permanent Styling Spray works well for this, despite the ‘straight’ in the name. It was designed to work hand-in-hand with heat tools to coat each strand of your hair and seal it smoothly with polymers and keratin proteins.

6. While our model wore her hair just like this for one look, the sky’s the limit for how you wear your curls once you’re done styling and defining them. Try sectioning a little chunk and twisting it into a messy loose bun atop your head for a very playful ‘90s inspired hairdo.
