Shaving should be easy, not an overthink. But like almost everything, there’s a lot of advice out there. Whether you’ve heard a rumour from someone at school or have been picking up tips from your big sister or friend, it’s hard to know what’s what.

So let’s debunk some common shaving myths together and follow our guide so you can feel confident with irritation-free skin!

Myth #1: Pressing Harder Will Make Your Skin Smoother

False. Pressing harder on the razor may seem like the way to go for that super-smooth feel, but stop right there! Pressing too hard can damage your skin. Always use a gentle and careful hand and a high-quality razor (Psst, Gillette Venus has a huge range to choose from) when shaving to avoid any cuts or damage to your skin. Remember, slow and steady wins the race.

Myth #2: Dry Shaving Is OK If You’re In A Rush

Think again! Dry shaving is a big beauty blunder. We know how it feels when you’re running late and get tempted to dry shave, but it can cause cuts, nicks and even skin irritation… Ouch! Take the time to wet your skin and lather up with a shaving cream or gel before you start shaving. Trust us, your skin will thank you.

Myth #3: Shaving Causes Hair To Grow Back Thicker

Raise your hand if you’ve heard this one before! Well, guess what? It’s just a myth. Shaving does not make your hair grow back thicker or darker. It’s just that sometimes the hair appears darker at the tip right after a shave because it’s shorter. But don’t worry, it’s just an illusion and you don’t have to count out shaving for fear of thicker, darker regrowth.

Myth #4: Shaving Will Give You Rashes and Irritated Skin

Not if you do it right!  Make sure to use a razor with an ergonomic handle and anti-slip soft grip, like the Gillette Venus Deluxe Smooth Sensitive Refillable Razor. Avoid applying too much pressure and never dry shave… trust us, proper lathering with a good shaving cream or gel is essential here. Also, make sure to moisturise your skin after shaving to keep it hydrated and healthy.

While sharing is caring, sharing a razor with others is not recommended.

Myth #5: Shaving Makes Your Fake Tan Fade Faster

Wrong again! Shaving can actually help your fake tan stay even and fresher for longer. When you shave, you’re exfoliating your skin and removing the dead skin cells, which can help keep your glowy tan intact. Just remember to moisturise your skin every day after fake tanning to prevent it from getting too flaky.

Myth #6: Borrowing A Friend’s Razor

While it might be fine to share your wardrobe with your bestie, sharing a razor is not recommended. Why? If you nick or cut yourself while shaving and using someone else’s razor, you’re putting yourself at risk of infection – ditto for the razor’s owner. There’s also the expiry date factor. If a razor is old, this can increase the risk of nicks, skin irritation, razor burn and bumps.

You do you! Shaving is a choice, not a necessity.

Myth #7: You Need To Shave

This is the most important and biggest misconception on our list of myths! We can often feel pressured to shave when we’re just not ready, or simply don’t want to. It’s perfectly fine to not want to shave at all. Shaving is a personal preference and not a requirement –you can still rock your favourite outfits and feel confident with or without body hair. You are in control of your body and it’s totally your choice. So, shave or not, it’s totally up to you!

Now you’re armed with the truth about these shaving myths, remember to be gentle with your skin, use proper technique and keep your skin moisturised for the best results.
