Showrunner Brian Yorkey told the mag that despite the show getting some negative feedback, he defends how it gives a real depiction of teen life.
"For people who aren't in high school, this show is a peek at what high school is like nowadays. It was supremely important that we do everything we could do tell the truth."
Katherine herself revealed that, "being a young person and not too far out of high school myself, I think it's important that people are able to see representations of these issues and characters they can relate to."
