But I’ve been watching it for, say, the 24th time, and one thing has become pretty apparent. Seth Cohen is kind of a massive dick.
Don’t get me wrong, he is loveable and quirky and probably the best thing about the show… but some of the things he did are so not cool.
Anna and Summer drama
The whole Anna and Summer sitch was pretty crappy, but we WILL excuse him of kissing them both on the same day (in different rooms of the house) because it was the first bit of female attention he’s ever gotten. But still, not cool.
He's majorly sexist
Seth gets majorly pissed off when he goes to a meeting for his graphic novel and see’s it is with a woman. Seth doesn’t believe women can be taken seriously in the comic book world, which is pretty shit of him. But as SOON as she compliments him, he is obsessed with her.
Not to mention that he starts to completely disregard Summer for Reed. He had just spent a whole season winning her back off Zack, and now that one other girl compliments him, he completely starts to ditch Summer for Reed.
Dick!
He then tells Reed that Zack is gay so she won’t be interested in him and so he can have her all to himself.
The lesbian drama with Alex and Marissa
He makes Marissa and Alex’s relationship into a queer joke. Not to mention how many times he asks them to make out in front of him.
Oh, but when he was dating Alex, he was completely freaking out that she had an ex… a female ex.
Ugh.
He cheats on Summer FREQUENTLY.
Okay… so it's not that frequent but he is continuously getting himself into situations to hurt Summer. When Summer is having second thoughts when they first start dating, Seth runs to Vegas and makes out with a prostitute all night. Not only that, but Summer has to come and bail him out from the pimp who he owes money to… even though he’s been kissing another girl.
Later in the series, Seth goes to spring break and enters a whipped cream competition with a girl. On national TV, he kisses her, and Summer sees.
DICK!
He took Oliver's side instead of Ryan's in season one
This was the most frustrating thing for me to watch, for a couple of reasons. A) being that I f***ing hate Oliver and can’t stand this part of the series and B) Seth takes Oliver’s side because he gets him free concert tickets and lives in a penthouse.
While Ryan has real concerns about Oliver, Seth doesn’t take his side.
Not cool bro.
He can't physically handle Summer being smarter than him
He has a complete mental breakdown when Summer, his beloved girlfriend, gets a higher SAT score than him. He literally can’t handle his girlfriend being smarter than him.
He even competes with Summer to get into Brown, which SHE WINS btw.
But, when they had the opportunity to go to Brown together, he freaks out and doesn’t go to his meeting at all, meaning he nearly messed up their entire future together.
He doesn't like that Summer changes
When Summer decides that she has a passion for activism, he tries to get the ‘old Summer’ back by making her read gossip mags and watch reality TV. Instead of embracing her newfound passion.
Okay… that hurt to write. But I’m glad I did.
Regardless of all this I still love you Seth. Just do better. XOXO
