“I’d starve myself for days and I’d wear these corsets every single day, pulled so tight I could barely breathe. I used to wear corsets every single day to make my waist smaller, which is mental but I so badly just wanted to look like Jade, Leigh and Perrie," the 30-year-old told the publication.
The singer further confided that she started masking who she was through her makeup, hair, diet and lip fillers.
Now that she is away from the band and feels more free within her own identity, she's ceased with the corsets and fillers and is wearing less makeup due to improved body confidence.
In the wake of her departure, many have speculated as to Jesy's standing with her former bandmates, particularly after she didn't publicly congratulate Perrie and Leigh-Anne after they welcomed their respective children into the world.
The singer told the publication that her leaving the band was a mutual decision, revealing that it was actually the girls who approached Jesy's mum, Janice, suggesting she needed a mental health break.
As for what terms they're on these days, the friends haven't spoken in a while, albeit for a few texts. Jesy described this dynamic as "weird", while also acknowledging that the space was necessary.
“Hopefully at some point in the future we can all come back together. I love them. They are my sisters in so many ways, but for the time being we just don’t talk," Jesy said.
Now, the popstar is gearing up to release her debut single as a solo artist, Boyz featuring Nicki Minaj.
So it looks like a new era of Jesy Nelson is coming, one in which she feels as though she can be her authentic self.
