Feelin' Hairy? Here's The Go On Normal & Abnormal Body Hair

Your curly questions questions answered. - by Dolly Doctor
  • 05 Jul 2021

Here's the deal - some of us are hairy, some of us aren't as hairy.

It's totally normal, and even better, your hair is part of what makes you YOU.

But of course it's only natural to wonder why you might be hairier or less hairy than others.

One anonymous reader came to Dolly Doctor to voice her concern.

"There's some on my stomach, back, breast area and bottom," she wrote.

"My friends my age [15] don't have it at all. Please help because I am too shy to wear a bikini."

Hairy situations can crop up in more ways than one...

Dolly Doctor came back to our reader with some insight - and it might just help you as well.

Firstly, if the hair is very visible on certain parts of your body – especially the back – there might be a hormone imbalance, Dolly Doctor explains.

Don't panic, as this is super treatable. The first thing to do is simply book an appointment with your GP to discuss it a little more.

During puberty, there are rapid increases in several hormones (chemicals) in the body that lead to your physical growth as well as breast and pubic hair development.

These hormones also cause increased oil production and hair growth.

Boys as well as girls experience these hormone changes but in different proportions, which is why boys grow more facial and body hair compared to girls.

Don't fret if you're wondering what TH is going on with your hair...

However it's normal for girls to also develop fine moustache and sideburn hair (which is not usually noticeable), as well as hairier arms and legs.

Pubic hair can also grow on the stomach for girls but only in a line from the pubic bone straight up the middle to the belly button.

And girls also grow small numbers of hairs on the dark circles around their nipples (the areolae), but not on the chest itself.

So, if hair appears in a girl on the lower stomach, back, chest, or buttocks, then this suggests that the puberty hormones might be a little off.

This can be caused by a number of different medical conditions so it's best to get it looked at and diagnosed.

Removing hair by shaving, waxing or depilatory creams is ok but it's temporary, and if there is a large surface area to cover, it can also be time consuming and expensive.

There isn't any particular food type or diet that will reduce your body hair. So pop into your doctor and have a chat to them.

You can talk to your mum or dad first if you like and they could help you arrange your appointment.
