Remember, a real suntan is a sign of skin damage, and exposure to UV radiation from the sun or a solarium increases your risk of skin cancer and ages your skin. In fact, according to Better Health 80 per cent of fine lines and wrinkles can be attributed to UV exposure. That's why a spray tan is a great way to get that look of healthy glowing skin without the nasty side effects.
Below, the best tips for preparing for a spray tan.
What to know before getting a spray tan
Pre-grooming is important...
When preparing for a spray tan, it's important to prep your skin appropriately to get the most out of it. Ahead of your appointment, start by exfoliating your skin to remove dead cells by using small, circular motions, and avoid scrubbing too hard or you could damage the skin’s delicate surface. Tanning pro James Harknett told marie claire UK: "Wrists, ankles, elbows and knees are prime areas prone to colour grabbing and will easily turn too dark so you should always apply less tan to these areas. And make sure you exfoliate them first to keep the colour even."
It's also important to moisturise all over - leaving enough time for it to fully soak into the skin.
It's best to keep your shaving or waxing to at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. Just before you tan it's a good idea to take a cool shower and wash away deodorant, body lotion and freshen the skin from perspiration which can react with the tan and cause a slight yellow effect.
Check the weather...
It may seem silly, but being prepared is always going to help in the long run. On the morning of your spray tan appointment, check the weather forecast. Take an umbrella even if there is only a slight chance of rain - better safe than sorry!

Plan your trip home...
If you plan on driving home following your appointment - great. If it's public transport be mindful of what time you'll be hopping on at - during rush hour you might be stuck in a sticky gross situation. If in doubt - taxi. And don't even think of cycling.
Find a salon (or colour) you trust...
When it comes to a great tan, finding a salon or tan product you love and trust is key. InStyle Australia's Digital Beauty Editor touts the Elle Effect as giving her an Instagram glow IRL.
What to wear to your spray tan
Your clothing choice is tres important
When it comes to a spray tan appointment, black cotton underwear is a must. When it comes to picking a pair of cotton knickers to pop on after your appointment, choose a pair that aren't too tight and don't have a large band of elastic.
As to what you wear after, loose-fitting, dark and washable clothes are best. Buy yourself a black jumpsuit or dress (that doesn't have too-tight elastic anywhere) and you're set for life.
Pick your shoes carefully...
Always pack a pair of thongs to pop on after your spray tan appointment - avoiding closed-toe shoes and socks at all costs!
Leave bulky items at home...
Even if you're going straight from work to your appointment, best leave the bulky bags behind. You don't want to carry a heavy bag on your shoulder, only to come home and have a big ol' mark.
Ditch the jewellery...
Always remember to take off all jewellery prior to your appointment. Not only do you not want marks to show after the appointment, you don't want to accidentally leave your best necklace or ring behind!
How to make your spray tan last
Now that you've done the spray tan and made it home safely - how do you keep it as long as possible?
Shower the right way...
For the first shower after your tan, it's always best to use water that's lukewarm and not too hot. Avoid shower gels that leave residue behind on the skin (your first clue is that the product describes itself as 'deeply moisturising'). The residue from the moisturiser can degrade the life of your tan. Basic, natural products are best.
Pat, pat, pat...
After your first few showers following your spray tan appointment, rather than rubbing yourself dry take your towel and softly pat yourself dry. This way, you won't rub off any tan and be left with a nice, even glow.
Moisturising is key...
In the days and weeks following your tan, it's best to keep your skin as hydrated as possible. If you're an avid fitness enthusiast, after moisturising gently dust your body with baby powder. This will stop the fabrics from digging into the tan and causing any patching.
