Meet our new heroes, Cati Domitrovich, 19 and Alex Nagle, 17, BFFs from Austin, Texas who literally faked a proposal to score sweet treat on the house!
Apparently they were both having a really bad week so they drove out of town for the weekend. Cati, who's an actress, had the idea to cheer themselves up by taking on other identities. She was happy to just play newlyweds or something but Alex went one step further and suggested he propose to her at dinner!
So they hatched a plan, which included getting a ring and picking out a romantic riverside restaurant.
"The proposal was a hit," Cati told Seventeen. "When I went to the bathroom, Alex told the waitress he was proposing to his girlfriend and that he wanted it on video. So when I got back from the bathroom, he told me we were taking a picture. He then bent down on one knee and began his speech."
"I ended up getting a bit nervous so I accidentally cut him off in the middle of his spiel, but I said yes and everyone clapped!"
The waitress then came back with a tiny cup of creme brûlée, some chocolate mousse, and a little piece of cake to celebrate their "special moment."
Once the pics hit Twitter, the story BLEW UP and went viral very quickly, which took Cati by surprise.
"When I posted the tweet I thought it'd get maybe 600 likes at most," she said. "Some people are really upset about it, but others have found it brilliant. The best part is seeing all the people tagging their friends or significant others saying they wanted to try it too! It was so crazy, and this definitely cured our bad weeks!"
But here's the plot twist... despite the fact that the besties essentially scammed them, the restaurant surprisingly contacted Cati and invited the "couple" to come back! But she says they're not planning on going back because "it would be a bit awkward."
Of course we would never condone conning a restaurant for free dessert but wow, what a ride!
