Should it hurt to take out a tampon? Dolly Doctor has the answer

Tampon troubles? Experiencing pain? No need to freak out just yet, read this. - by Dolly Doctor
  • 10 Mar 2022

When it comes to periods, everyone experiences them differently. Some people get headaches, some get cramps, and some are lucky enough to get no symptoms at all.

Similarly, all of us differ when it comes to the sanitary products we use. Some opt for pads, others tampons, menstrual cups, period underwear, and some free flow.

There is no *correct* way to have a period. We're individuals whose bodies can work in different ways, and who are comfortable with different sanitary products.

However, there is a downside to these differences. Because we all experience different symptoms and feelings in our bodies - sometimes - we don't know what pain is considered normal and what might be something to be concerned about.

This is particularly the case when we get our period for the first time and are navigating the changes, for example using pads, tampons, etc. It can be very overwhelming, and take some time to figure out what's considered "normal".

One of our readers wrote to Dolly Doctor specifically about whether or not pain when removing a tampon was considered "normal". You can read the question and Dolly Doctor's answer below.

Dear DOLLY Dr,

I just got my period and I was wondering if it is normal for it to be painful when you take your tampon out? Because this is happening to me, and I'm freaking out!

Dolly Doctor says...

There's no need to freak out at all. Using tampons usually takes practice before it feels completely comfortable. If you've inserted the tampon and worn it for a couple of hours without any discomfort, then there's nothing to worry about. It's possible that when you pulled it out it tilted on an angle and stretched the opening of your vagina a bit.

Your vagina might have been a bit dry because the moisture was soaked into the tampon, especially if you only had a light period flow and used a super or regular tampon. Make sure you insert the tampon straight up and back, and when you pull it out you pull it down and forward to avoid it tilting. If you continue to have pain or major problems with using tampons, have a chat to your mum. Or if you're really worried, your doctor.
