International retailer H&M have come under fire for a racist clothing ad on their website and the controversy is picking up steam across social media.
The ad in question is for a hoodie with a slogan that reads: “coolest monkey in the jungle.”
Sounds innocent enough, right? WRONG!
The retailers chose a young black model to wear the hoodie in the ad which is 3000% wrong as the term “monkey” has been used in a derogatory sense to demean the African community for decades.
Now, H&M is copping major backlash online…

.@hm this is inappropriate, offensive, and racist. Why is the white kid "a jungle survivor" and the black kid the "coolest monkey in the jungle"? How do you think this is okay? REMOVE this and the clothing piece. This is completely distasteful! #racist #hm https://t.co/uati7eI0Io pic.twitter.com/WSF9Wiksio

More casual racism from H&M. This is nothing new when it comes to these clothing companies like Abercrombie and Tommy Hilfilger who have a long history of using their products to convey racist messages. https://t.co/6XwimxngCS

A H&M spokesperson has since apologised for the ad with a public statement:
“We apologise to anyone this may have offended,” they wrote.
Despite their apology, the angry tweets just keep pouring in.
