Just yesterday, he dropped a brand new track, "Nervous", and we have to admit it's so far our favourite from the album.
Just take a listen:
However, some fans are making some very interesting parallel's to Selena Gomez's hit song "Bad Liar", and now we can't un-hear it.
The songs have similar bass lines, and they both mumble-sing on each. They even have the same rhythmic pattern.
Even the lyrics are similar! They both centre around having a crush on somebody but are too nervous to make a move.
"It makes sense that Shawn Mendes made a 'response' to 'Bad Liar,' because he was a big supporter of it when it came out. So, it would be the guy version of it," wrote one fan.
It's true, when "Bad Liar" came out, Shawn posted a photo of himself listening to it on his Instagram story.
But just because they sound similar, it doesn't mean that Shawn ripped Selena off or that there's a rivalry between the two. Besides, "Bad Liar" wasn't all Selena's idea anyway. The song actually samples an original banger "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads from 1977. Both "Nervous" and "Bad Liar" were also co-written by Julia Michaels, which might explain why they sounds so similar too.
It's interesting to note that "Nervous" also sounds similar to Janelle Monáe's "Make Me Feel", which was also written by Julia Michaels.
