While the show's producers have denied rumours that DeGeneres is looking to quit her long-running show after all this backlash, that hasn't stopped Twitter from doing what they do best. In the #ReplaceEllen tag, people are offering up an extensive range of suggestions for people they'd like to see replace DeGeneres. It's important to note, that replacing *one* host would likely not do that much to change the toxic culture that's grown on set.
Many of the suggestions do kinda seem like wildcards and potentially backward slides. While DeGeneres is white, her openness about her sexuality is no small win for queer representation in the mainstream media.
Many people are suggesting Black women in the #ReplaceEllen thread, though one Twitter user has pointed out the potentially surface-level gesture this is. "Folks are calling for a Black woman to #ReplaceEllen... But what are we really saying? That these stars should wait in the wings for 17 years until a white celebrity gets canceled [sic] before they can be granted a hosting opportunity? Nah...New platforms. Keep the leftovers."
They're right and they should say it, TBH. In the spirit of "why the heck not" though, these are some of our fav #ReplaceEllen picks. Ideally on a sparkly new show without the very problematic sounding executive producers, thanks.
1. Dakota Johnson
2. Tiffany Hadish
3. Ellen Page
4. Wanda Sykes
5. Laverne Cox
6. Tabitha Brown
7. Tiffany Pollard
There are, of course, some much more improbable suggestions but the unconventional thinking is appreciated.
