According to The Hollywood Reporter, a reboot of Pretty Little Liars is officially coming and it’s being helmed by Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The news comes after sources told the outlet that Aguirre-Sacasa is looking to “spread his wings” and distance himself a little bit from writing purely CW TV series, especially, we imagine after his latest Katy Keene (which starred Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale) and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina were cancelled.
But, if you were hoping to see Aria and the gang back, think again. As the report goes, the new Pretty Little Liars series will feature a new story and new characters, with a script penned by Aguirre-Sacasa. While this is being pitched as a genuine reboot, the series also had its own set of spin-offs in Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists (2019) and Pretty Little Liars: Ravenswood (2018). Both lasted only a season before they were sadly cancelled.
Anyway, naturally, fans are a bit skeptical about a reboot for a show that only finished a handful of years ago.
“Since Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars are getting rebooted, you can probably expect other reboots of shows of that era like Teen Wolf, Glee and Once Upon a Time,” seemingly joked one Twitter user. “I also wouldn't be shocked if Vampire Diaries got a full on reboot with new characters playing Elena, Stefan, etc.”
“Pretty Little Liars ended in 2017. Tf we need a reboot for? That sh*t still fresh.”
No network is currently attached to the reboot project but sources said that WarnerMedia is eyeing a spot on HBO’s streaming service HBO Max (soo, given where we can watch other HBO shows in Australia, we'd guess we might see it on Foxtel Go or Binge). It’s also unclear whether the OG PLL crew will appear or if series creator Marlene King will be involved.
For now, we’ll be marathoning the original seven seasons and these 24 other teen TV shows we just can’t get enough of.
