But his death was actually Paul Wesley's idea.
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live, Paul revealed that he actually told the show writers that killing his character off was the right thing to do, due to what he'd done in his past.
"Yes, he died. I was very happy he died and I had actually requested that he died. He did a lot of bad things and I felt like he deserved death," Paul said.
"On The Vampire Diaries, I was playing the good guy. I felt like I was started to become a little bit typecast as the good brother and I really tried my best to influence them to allow me to be the bad guy and they made that happen in season three," Paul revealed. "I turned into a Ripper and I felt like that was a big part of my doing."
It's true, Stefan's character did face a lot of his own battles throughout the show. Ian Somerhalder recently spoke to us about how beautiful Stefan's character was, and how much fun Paul had playing a villain for a hot minute.
"Stefan was such a beautifully played character who had really amazing depth and layers. This has been a ten-year journey with him, he’s family. He’s my little brother.
Paul's comments about TVD didn't end there though. While on the Watch What Happens Live after show, he revealed his preferred ending to the show, and yep, it involves Elena!
"I feel good about it [the ending]. I honestly think both brothers should've died. I would've liked that we both died and that Elena, the girl at the end of the show, like all her memory was wiped and she went on to live a normal life and forgot that we ever existed. I think that would've been nice."
Bless him.
