Despite their major success, Niall admits that the boys blew up all the time and had "s****y arguments'.
Speaking to The Telegraph he said, "It was incredible. But we got tired. Not tired of it, just tired out. I can never really remember any major bust-ups, just brotherly family nagging s****y arguments like that.
"But we were gonna end up killing each other. We all sat down on day, had a chat and it was like, 'We need to take a break, chill out and try something new'."
Now, three years on a hiatus the Irish singer is sparking hope of a reunion.
"I'm enjoying what I'm doing, but if one of the lads were to pick up the phone and say, 'It’s time', I’d do it'."
Niall is gearing up for the release of his second album, with his first single, "Nice To Meet Ya" dropping in ONE HOUR!
Niall shared a snipped of his lyrics with his fans before the release:
It's a good day to be a Directioner.
