The biggest rumour about Heath Ledger and his tragic death in 2008 is that he took his character as The Joker way too seriously, evidently leading to his death.
But according to his sister Kate, it couldn’t be more false.
Speaking in a Q&A panel at the Tribeca Film Festival, she revealed the rumours were truly shocking to her.
“I was really shocked because that was him having fun,” she said. “Every report was coming out that he was depressed and that [the role] was taking a toll on him, and we’re going, honestly, it was the absolute opposite. It couldn’t be more wrong.
“He had an amazing sense of humour, and I guess maybe only his family and friends knew that, but he was having fun. He wasn’t depressed about The Joker!”
Wow. It’s good to know that he at least died doing what he loved, instead of it haunting him in the way we all once thought.
Nearly ten years since his death, a documentary celebrating his life and work will be released for a short time in cinemas.
I am Heath Ledger premieres in his home town of Perth on May 9.
