#TanaCon was the FyreFestival of the YouTube world… and it turns out the motives were just as shady.
YouTuber Tana Mongeau held a convention for ~creators~ last week, which turned into an absolute nightmare when thousands of people turned up and couldn’t get in.
According to police, the YouTube event actually failed so hard because it was a big old scam.
Tana said that she sold around 5,000 tickets to the convention, which was allegedly capacity of the venue. Later, she claimed that 15-20K fans who didn’t purchase VIP or register for free tickets showed up, which caused an absolute sh*t storm.
The City of Garden Grove police department, who were called to the event to deal with the security issues, released a press release earlier this week.
“The police supervisors on-scene estimated the crowd was between 4,000-5,000 people,” the police statement read. “Social media sites said the crowd was 20,000 and this was not accurate.”
The venue could actually only hold 1,150 people, not 5K like Tana said.
So basically, Tana lied to sell more tickets which she knew wouldn’t work… just to make some money.
Tana has promised that everyone would receive refunds, so let’s just hope that happens before any charges are pressed.
