Ashley Graham was the only categorised “plus-size” woman at yesterday’s Met Gala, and that’s an issue. Especially because she is in no way “plus-size” and more just the average woman anyway.
It’s not at all surprising, but it unfair.
In an interview with The Cut, Ashley even admitted that a few years ago, she couldn’t find a single designer to get her a sample-size gown for the Met.
“I couldn’t get a designer to dress me,” she said. “You can’t just show up in jeans and a T-shirt.”
Now, beauty blogger Gabi Greg is taking matters into her own hands. As the co-founder of plus-size clothing brand Pemme, she is feeling that a Fat Gala is needed.
“Fat girls let’s make our own met gala plz. Maybe it will be an annual @PREMMEdotUS event,” she wrote on Twitter.
Obviously, people loved the idea.
The Met is known to always put slim people in their spotlight, without even considering anyone in Hollywood that is on the thicker side. According to The New York Times, even if you have a spare $30K for a Met Gala ticket, you still need to go through a waitlist and then be approved by Anna Wintour.
“Qualifications for inclusion have to do with buzz and achievement (and beauty), a.k.a. the gospel according to Anna, more than money,” the article states.
