Shawn Mendes has used his new music to really open up to his fans, especially with his single “In My Blood”.
In it, he reveals that he has really struggled with anxiety.
And he spoke further about it when talking to Beats 1 Radio shortly after the song was released. “[Anxiety] was something that hit me within the last year. Before that, growing up, I was a pretty calm kid, super steady.”
He admitted that he “spoke to a therapist a couple of times” to get his anxiety under control, as well as opening up more to his friends and family.
“I made a conscious effort to be more connected to the people in my life,” he told The Sun. “I found I was closing myself off from everybody, thinking that would help me battle it, then realising the only way I was going to battle it was opening up and letting people in.”
He added, “People forget how important it is to talk to family and friends about what’s going on in your life. The more you tell people how you feel, the more you understand it and have more control of your life.”
Because Shawn hasn’t always struggled with his mental health, he also understands how hard it is for people who don’t suffer to understand it completely.
“All pain is temporary, and the thing is with anxiety, and why it’s such a hard thing for people who don’t have it to understand, is that it’s very random, it hits you when you don’t expect it,” he said. “Sometimes it lasts two hours, sometimes it lasts a day and sometimes it lasts five minutes.
“The one thing that can be done to combat that is to talk about it and, for me, to make a song about it. […] The point of the song is that no matter how long that lasts, you can come out the other end stronger. And you come out on the other end always.”
