Jay Asher’s novel has become an absolute sensation since hitting the television screen, and as you know, Selena Gomez has acted as an executive producer on the show.

The show follows the tragic suicide of teenager Hannah Baker (played by Aussie actress Katherine Langford), and how a series of awful interactions she had at school led to her fateful depression.

Selena herself has spent time in a mental health facility in 2016, and she has opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about how she feels a personal connection to the character of Hannah.

“I see myself in Hannah so much. Seven years ago I did and even more so today, which I think is funny because it’s backwards. The older I get the more insecure I get, which is odd. But that’s something a lot of people can relate to. Her personality is a quiet strength. I’ve never really been the one to be in anyone’s face. A lot of girls feel like they have to be a certain way for attention. Social media has amplified all of that. I get that she didn’t want that to be what her life was.”

Although Selena didn’t go to a traditional high school, she did feel like she had similar experiences during her time in Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place which began in 2007 and ended in 2012.

Selena’s recent interview with Vogue also revealed her personal connection to the show, and why she decided to help produce it.

“I went to the biggest high school in the world, which is the Disney Channel.”

As for her use of social media, she admitted that she “freaked out” after learning she was once the most-followed user, and even went as far to admit that she doesn’t have the app on her phone.

There’s no doubt that this show has touched on some seriously difficult questions, and if you, or somebody you know is suffering with mental illness, please contact Beyond Blue at 1300 22 4636, or visit their site here.
