A fandom is a glorious and spiritually binding institution that has been around since the dawn of age (well, the dawn of popular culture, at least).
But while it’s an incredible thing to be a part of a fandom, it can sometimes be unnecessarily malicious when the members of opposing fandoms gang up on each other and tbh it needs to stop.
Arianators (Ariana Grande fans) and Selenators (Selena Gomez fans) are currently at odds over which one of their queens should have won the 2017 Woman of the Year award.
Last week it was announced that the “Fetish” singer was crowned Woman of the Year due to a variety of reasons including the fact that five of her albums have been in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, her Netflix series 13 Reasons Why has been a major hit, she’s done campaigns with Puma and Coach and last (but defs not least) she has raised more than $500,000 for the Lupus Research Alliance.
President of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group John Amato said, “Not only is Selena soaring on the charts, but she continuously inspires young women everywhere to be authentic, give back and to not be afraid to use their voice.”
But despite Sel’s impressive feats, Ariana fans are furious that the pint-sized pop star didn’t take out the award after her One Love Manchester concert raised over $3 million for victims and their families and they’ve unleashed on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Selena stans have clapped back at Arianators and are defending Billboard’s decision to crown Sel.
Man, people sure can be vicious behind their keyboards, can’t they?
At the end of the day, both Selena AND Ariana raised money for important causes but Billboard made their decision and we should all respect that.
