“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out,” they said in a Twitter thread.

“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision,” Sam continued, “but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f*ck it!”

WATCH Sam Smith has previously spoken with actress Jameela Jamil about pondering a sex change…

When Sam came out as non-binary, they at the time said they would continue to use the pronounces he/him. However, they have since changed their mind.

Smith acknowledged in their thread that there will most likely be “mistakes and misgendering” by people who don’t intend to be hurtful.

“But all I ask is you please please try,” they said.

While Smith is opening up more and more with their sexuality and gender, they are not in a place to “eloquently speak at length about what it means to be nonbinary but I can’t wait for the day that I am.”

Their intention right now is to be “VISIBLE and open.”

“Love you all,” Smith said, concluding their thread

“I’m scared shitless, but feeling super free right now.”

In a recent interview with actress Jameela Jamil, Smith spoke about whether or not a sex change was on the cards for him.

Sam spoke about always having a bit of war within their body and their mind about how they define themselves.

“I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I’ve sat there and questioned, ‘Do I want a sex change?’

They continued: “It’s something that I still think about… but I don’t think it is. When I saw the word ‘nonbinary’/ ‘genderqueer’ and I read into it and heard these people speaking I was like ‘f*ck that is me.’

“Nonbinary/gender queer us that you do not identify in a gender, you are just you. you are a mixture of different things. You are your own special creation. That’s how I take it. I’m not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between.”
