The 2018 Grammy Awards have officially kicked off, and despite Lorde being the ONLY woman nominated for Album of the Year, she’s the only person in that category not performing.
Each and every other performance in that category, is male.
Messed up? Absolutely!
Bruno Mars, Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar are all up for the same award, and they will all be performing at the event too. JAY-Z is also nominated, but he turned down the offer.
Lorde reportedly refused to perform after producers wouldn’t let her perform solo, as Variety reports.
She was asked to perform “American Girl” as part of a group to tribute the late Tom Petty instead of her own music alone.
After a reported huge argument, no agreement was reached, and TMZ reports that Lorde turned down the red carpet too.
Naturally, her mum was also pissed.
Tweeting a newspaper clipping about the situation, Sonja Yelich wrote, “this says it all.”
The clipping read, “Of the 899 people nominated in the last six Grammy Awards, the report found, 9 per cent were women. (This year, Lorde is the only woman nominated for album of the year; she is not scheduled to perform.”
Outraged? So are we.
Surprised? Not in the slightest.
