Ed Sheeran won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance with his song “Shape of You,” which seems fair… until it doesn’t.

When Ed took the win, (which he wasn’t even there to accept), there were boo’s in the crowd.

Nothing against Ed, who is a phenomenal artist, but he was up against strong female artists like Kesha, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk and Lady Gaga, all of whom put out songs that were relevant to what is happening in the world and in the industry today.

“I guess it’s a good thing Kesha didn’t win over Ed Sheeran, since the music industry doesn’t seem to care about examining its abuses of power,” one person tweeted.

Yikes.

However, Liam Payne has now come out and defended Ed’s win.

While chatting to Andy Cohen on his radio show, he said, “You can’t deny sometimes when there is a great song. At the end of the day, it has to all come back to the music.

“I completely understand all of what’s going on at the moment, and I think it’s great that people are supporting that, but you can’t deny a great pop song,” he continued.

Rita Ora, who joined Liam in his interview, agreed.

“His album was phenomenal last year,” she said. “It was massive. You can’t deny it. Numbers don’t lie. Don’t get me wrong, there were some amazing songs this year, and to be honest, the whole award show was tough. Anybody could have won. All the nominations were fantastic. I think Ed should have got more nominations, if you want me to be completely honest.”
