Kelly Marie Tran, the actress who plays Rose Tico, a member of The Resistance from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has been the subject of ongoing harassment from hateful Star Wars fans over the last few months.
The Last Jedi star hasn’t told us herself about the harassment, but the “Star Wars Facts” Twitter account has tweeted this was the reason for her suddenly deleting every single one of her Instagram posts.
“Kelly Marie Tran has deleted all the posts off her Instagram due to months of harassment she has received for her character Rose in #TheLastJedi”, the account tweeted.
The messages she has been sent are sexist and racist that have mocked her appearance and role in Star Wars.
Before deleting everything, Kelly had written on Instagram that she was terrified that her character would be made fun of, so kept off social media for months after The Last Jedi had been released.
“I avoided public social media for a long time purely because I was afraid. I was terrified of being picked apart, of being scrutinized, of being seen. It took me a year of self-work—and some really amazing, supportive friends—to make me realize that it’s none of my business if people like me or not. It doesn’t change my goals, my dreams, what I want to do with the opportunities I’ve been given.”
Mark Hamill who plays Luke Sykwalker has responded to the hate on Instagram, sharing a cute photo of himself and Kelly with the caption, “What’s not to love? #GetALifeNerds”.
Kelly isn’t the only Star Wars actress to have been sent hate. Her co-star, Daisy Ridley, had also experienced online harassment, so deleted her Instagram too.
Daisy was attacked after she spoke up about gun control.
She told Glamour magazine, “I posted a thing about gun regulations, because I was at an event in tribute to the Orlando shooting at Pulse [where 49 people were killed and over 50 were wounded]. People weren’t nice about how I looked. And I was like, ‘I’m out.’ Simple as that. That is not what I signed up for.”
