Uh oh, looks like Katy Perry has landed herself in hot water for a seriously offensive incident.
Since the start of her career, Katy has been heralded as a gay icon for her support of the LGBTQIA community with songs like “I Kissed A Girl” about a same-sex kiss and for conveying gay themes in her music videos e.g. when two men kissed in her “Firework” vid.
But unforch Katy has now done something that’s pretty damn disappointing.
Katy has collaborated with notoriously homophobic rappers, Migos on her track “Bon Appétit”.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, the singer also allegedly stood by as the rappers acted homophobic on-set of Saturday Night Live.
A group of drag queens were reportedly booked to perform “Bon Appètit” on the show with Migos and Katy.
After hearing about this, Migos made their management fire the drag queens.
Most of the performers were sent home with only a couple kept in the act and they were told to sit on the other end of the table away from Migos.
One of the drag queens involved went on record saying:
“I was one of the performers on that table with them the whole time, during the rehearsal for 3 days. On the day of the filming, when I got there, I was told to leave. I wasn’t on the set at the time, but we were asking what happened. They said it was because Migos doesn’t feel comfortable with having drag queens there.”
Another drag queen backed up the claims, saying: “I heard it from the stylist. They changed the queens out in the ‘Bon Appétit’ number, and they didn’t seem too thrilled during rehearsal either, with us there.”
An SNL staff member who was present during the incident confirmed that the story is true.
“I work at SNL and the rumours are true! Migos held up rehearsal because they ‘weren’t comfortable with the drag queens’ being there,” the anonymous source said.
“There were initially more drag queens on the set for that song, but after Migos threw a fit, Katy Perry’s team removed some of the queens from the performance. Additionally, Katy Perry didn’t invite any of the queens to the afterparty… So, none of them were allowed in.”
After reports of the incident started circling the internet, Migos’ label Capitol spoke out to try and silence the story, saying that they are “completely false and fabricated”, despite the claims from several drag queens and an SNL staffer.
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their outrage over the incident.
