Taylor Swift’s relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal may have only lasted for a hot second and been a decade ago, but Swifties never forget. ICYMI, the pair had a three-month-long romance back in 2010, and as a result of an unwitting Instagram post on Gyllenhaal’s behalf, the Taylor Swift fanbase has suddenly mobilised to remind us all about it.
Earlier this week the 39-year-old Spider-Man star shared a post on his Instagram in support of a new project meant to inspire students and remote learners. “I’ve worn my glasses ever since I parted my hair meticulously with gel (see above), which is why NEW EYES has always been near and dear to my heart,” the actor wrote in the caption.
“Since 1932, @neweyes_ has provided eyeglasses to people who needed them most. I’m thrilled that they’ve partnered with @theinspireprojectus to create Project Human: Changing the Way We See the World, a speaker series coming to schools and remote learners this fall. Project Human is designed to spark conversations focusing on unity and equality. It’s an opportunity for students to interact with public figures and do what they do best: Keep ‘em on their toes!’”
So, why did a seemingly well-intentioned post with a cute glasses picture set off the Taylor Swift fandom?
It comes from a fan-favourite Swift song that many believe was about her short-lived relationship with Gyllenhaal. From her 2012 album Red, the song is called “All Too Well,” and features some choice lyrics. “You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin-sized bed,” Swift sings in the song. That and the cute throwback glasses pic was all it took to set the Swifties off.
“u [sic] posted this pic and thought that the swifties would do nothing???? mistake” wrote one fan, while another, jokingly we hope, demanded, “Give Taylor Swift her scarf back.” That’s a reference to the “All Too Well” line that refers to a legendary scarf lost at Gyllenhaal’s sister’s home. “I left my scarf there at your sister’s house, and you still got it in your drawer even now,” sings Swift, presumably about Maggie Gyllenhaal.
That said, it looks like there’s no bad blood between the former couple, and both of them have been dating their respective partners for a few solid years now. Here’s hoping all the extra attention might have won New Eyes a few more supporters!
