Selena Gomez’s era of heartbreak after Justin Bieber is over, and she wants people to know about it! We’re speaking both musically and personally here btw, the revelations come from a new interview with Rolling Stone as the singer gears up for the Grammys nomination process. The main takeaway? When releasing her album Rare and kicking off the Rare era (which now includes her Rare Beauty line), the singer wanted to make it clear that ‘Jelena’ was completely finished.
“It was my idea to release ‘Lose You to Love Me’ and ‘Look at Her Now’ [back-to-back],” Gomez told Rolling Stone. “They [my record] were kind of nervous about it, because they didn’t want to take away from either song. I knew from the get-go that ‘Lose You to Love Me’ was going to be the bigger song, because I just felt it in my heart. I wanted people to take away that this was a journey and that it was completely closed. I don’t want people to see me as just sad and hurt. I didn’t want that anymore. I wanted people to know that I experienced something real, and that part of me is over.”
When she was writing Rare, Gomez explains that she “focused on creating more songs that were lyrically about transformation and vulnerability and heartbreak. It felt like [the material] was really, really strong, and I was very happy about it. I think that becoming more involved than I ever have been [in the making of the album] helped me gain confidence and empowered me completely. I took control over what I was going to say, what I was going to do.”
It’s not the first time that Gomez has stressed that she’s closed the chapter on her nearly 10-year-long off-on relationship. As fans know, after splitting for the final time in March 2018, Bieber went on to swiftly date and then marry his now-wife, Hailey Bieber, all by September of the same year. When she first released them, she told Ryan Seacrest that her songs “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now” were “me wrapping up a chapter in a pretty little bow.”
As for her love life now? Well, there’s no official word on any romantic partners yet. However, we did see Gomez getting a little flustered about a “cute boy” during the filming of her new cooking show. Intriguing! We’re watching this space.
