Demi Lovato may be having a rough time in the aftermath of the end of her relationship and engagement to actor Max Ehrich, but at least she’s got great, supportive women in her corner. Despite their spotty history of friendship-turned-feud, it looks like Selena Gomez is only interested in sending good energy towards Lovato. Just a day after the release of Lovato’s very pointed breakup ballad, Gomez has appeared in a promo video praising her former best friend.
The vid in question is to promote YouTube music, and in the video, Gomez sings the praises of a number of women artists. “I think we have some of the best lyricists in the game right now,” Gomez says, “Dua and Ariana, Taylor, Demi—these artists are just lifting up the game with their lyrics. It makes me so happy.”
So kind! That said, it looks like Lovato isn’t suuuuper keen to start a new era of music collabs and slumber parties with her former friend. As fans know, the former Disney stars have had a rocky relationship for a while.
After Lovato’s performance earlier this year at the 2020 Grammy Awards, Gomez congratulated her publicly on Instagram. “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was. Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery,” Gomez wrote. For those who missed it, the January show was Lovato’s first public performance since her overdose in 2018.
Apparently, the praise was a little confusing for Lovato. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt…,” she said to Harper’s Bazaar, reportedly stopping herself mid-thought. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
You can watch Gomez’s sweet message below, here’s hoping it lands well with Lovato herself.
