As the bushfires tear through Queensland and New South Wales, a new wave of anger has begun to sweep over young people, with most of us asking the same question: why are our politicians turning a blind eye to climate change?

Certainly, the reason for the bushfires is complex. There are a number of different factors such as environmental history, firefighting techniques, fuel management and landscape planning.

But what we do know is that climate change is making a bad situation far, far worse.

Australia has a history of bushfires, however, what is starting to become concerning is the unprecedented extreme fire weather conditions – such as prolonged drought, desiccating high temperatures and strong winds – and while this extreme change of our climate model is unusual, it is also to be expected.

Why?

Because our climate is changing, and our planet is starting to show us what happens when we ignore it.

Understandably, the devastation of the Aussie bushfires has sparked a new online movement and a hashtag, with everybody – inclining prominent celebrities – calling on our Prime Minister Scott Morrison to act.

#attnscottmorrison – scientists and meteorologists have warned us that bushfires would become more extreme and more frequent as the climate worsened.

This is not a normal bushfire.

Among others, the likes of Sarah Wilson, Osher Gunsberg, Lara Worthington and Zoe Foster-Blake have all taken to their social media to call for action.

The Originals star Phoebe Tonkin also took t Instagram to share her thoughts and spread the hashtag.

I write this with complete empathy and sadness for those affected by the fires burning throughout my beautiful country,” Phoebe began.

“I understand that this can be a sensitive time, and it’s hard to think past grief and fear, but as @jacindaardern said “we have to start moving beyond signs of hope, and deliver signs of action”. #ATTNSCOTTMORRISON”

“Right now our country is burning,” Pheobe wrote.

“Our home is on fire and only action will put out the flames. As an Australian, I call on you Prime Minister @scottmorrisonmp to meet immediately with emergency experts including Greg Mullins to discuss firefighting resources, climate action and a national emergency summit.
