The detail was revealed right as the news broke that she and her Australian boyfriend Cody Simpson have allegedly broken up.
According to an Instagram post, the podcast episode features Cyrus talking, "foreplay, getting over heartbreak, therapy, love languages, guilt, trauma, blowjobs, and most importantly—TEA being spilled." The accompanying clip features chopped up snippets of the interview, including Cyrus sharing, "I didn’t go all the way with a dude until I was 16, but I ended up marrying the guy."
While she doesn't mention "the guy" by name, it's pretty obvious she's talking about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. They began dating back in 2008 when they were both cast in the film The Last Song. Cyrus turned 16 in November that year, FYI. They eventually got married in December of 2018, before ultimately divorcing in August 2019.
Now, obviously this is just one line and we don't know the context of what else she says in the podcast episode yet (it's not been released at the time of writing) but we'd like to make one small point.
Cyrus seems to posit that her "going all the way" aka, having sex for the first time, at 16 is somehow late. It's absolutely not at all. While there are a lot of social pressures around it, "losing your virginity" doesn't have to happen by a certain time.
Psychosexual therapist Christine Rafe stresses the importance of having sex when you feel ready as an individual, not because you think you have to. “If you feel that you’ve been able to communicate about sex with someone. If you’re showing curiosity about yourself or about wanting to be sexually intimate, they might be signs that you’re feeling ready,” says Rafe.
“Readiness certainly can change,” she adds, “You could feel ready with one person or one circumstance and then feel completely different in another situation and that’s okay. Readiness certainly isn’t related to how many friends in your group have done it or have not done it.”
And that's on that.
