According to PEOPLE, an ever-trusty source confirmed the split news telling the publication that, "Miley and Kaitlynn broke up" but "they're still friends".
We know Miley and Kaitlynn have been friends for agessss, and according to the source, after their respective marriages broke down they found comfort in each other.
"They’ve been friends forever and were there for each other when they were both getting separated,” the insider tells PEOPLE, “but they’re just not in a romantic relationship anymore.”

Miley and Kaitlynn first let the world know they were a couple a mere matter of days after Liam Hemsworth and Miley announced their separation.
The official separation statement was released to PEOPLE on August 10 and read: "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.
"They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."

Then, we saw Miley and Kaitlynn holidaying in Italy together.
At first, we all thought it was just close friends helping each other through a breakup, until pics surfaced of the pair making out.
Although their separation was reportedly amicable, an insider recently told Page Six that Liam— who was in Australia when the news broke— was "blindsided" by the announcement seeing as the former couple hadn't decided on when exactly they planned to tell the world. The same source said Liam was intentionally holding off on announcing the news in the hope he could save their "crumbling" marriage.

Then there was Miley's heartbreaking 'Slide Away' performance at the 2019 VMA's, where she brought Kaitlynn as her date. Following that very public declaration of love, we assumed these two were more than just a post-breakup fling.
Alas, we were wrong.
A moment of silence for #hotgirlsummer, it was fun while it lasted.
