Although there were previous concerns about the movie being white-washed due to casting, Disney promised in December 2016 that all the main characters would be Chinese.
So far, they've kept that promise with the star of the show.
The casting call asked specifically for actors who can speak both English and Mandarin Chinese. Other requirements for the character of Mulan included "a power of speed and coordination and sheer force" with martial arts training as an added bonus. Although we aren't sure yet if Liu possesses those skills, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that she earned the nickname "Fairy Sister" among fans in China because of her "pure and innocent looks."
She has also starred in major films alongside Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, and Hayden Christensen.
The live-action remake of Mulan will be released in 2019.
