Vet

What they do

If you’ve ever tuned into an episode of Bondi Vet and seen the adventures Dr Chris Brown gets up to (from handling reptiles to delivering puppies), you’ll get a rough idea what you’re in for. The role of a vet is to look after the health and care of animals and the day-to-day role involves diagnosing illnesses, fixing injuries and performing surgeries.

How do you become a vet?

A veterinary science degree will take five to six years to finish, and include practical work. To qualify for the degree, you’ll need to finish high school with the necessary pre-requisite subjects and test scores needed to get in to the degree.

Dog Groomer

What they do

Um, dream job, much? Imagine getting to work at a doggy day spa! From nail clipping to trimming fur, it may sound glam but you will have to get down and dirty as you pamper different kinds of pets.

How do you become a dog groomer?

There are a variety of course available throughout Australia with different levels of experience. From a basic course in home grooming to a salon-manager level of expertise, it’s up to you how far you’d like to progress.

Zoo Keeper

What they do

Get up close and personal to wild animals in this incredible job. The role of a zoo keeper is to look after the wellbeing of the animals within your care at the zoo. This includes feeding them (and meal prep), cleaning their habitat, and helping to train or exercise the animals. SO COOL!

How do you become a zoo keeper?

To pursue the career of a zoo keeper, you’ll need a degree in animal science, biology or zoology, plus the subjects required to get into the course from high school.

Animal Shelter Manager

What they do

Help to re-home rescue pets! A manager will oversee the day-to-day running of the shelter, including making sure the animals are fed, exercised and that their area is clean. The role may also require you to look after any social media for the shelter (hello adorable Instagram accounts), plan events or activities for the shelter and oversee the adoption process for the animals.

Completing high school will be needed to gain an entry level position at a shelter but a degree or course related to animal-studies will be required for a management role. You also have the option of volunteering at a local animal shelter which will give you a good idea of what it’s like to work in one.

Marine biologist

What they do

This *may* be the closet way you’ll ever get to experience being a real-life mermaid. It involves the research of marine creatures, including whales, dolphins, sharks (eep) and basically anything that lives in the ocean. The work could be anything from studying the animal in the wild to analysing research data to looking at ways to promote the conservation and protection of sea life.

How do you become a marine biologist?

You’ll need to study a degree relevant to the field, such as marine biology or another biological science degree, such as zoology, plus you’ll need to complete certain subjects in order to get into the degree. You also have the option of continuing your education by studying a PHD.
