INTERVIEW: We spoke to Israel Broussard about his new movie

The TATBILB cutie is back! - by Stacey Hicks

INTERVIEW: We spoke to Israel Broussard about his new movie

You might know him for playing cute next-door neighbour Josh in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, but now Israel Broussard is back on our screens in a big way and we are here for it.

He stars as Carter in the slasher/comedy sequel Happy Death Day 2U where he has to help his girlfriend Teresa out of a timeloop where she keeps getting killed by a masked murderer and having to re-live the same day over and over.

It’s somehow hilarious and terrifying all at once!

So we were pumped to chat to him and get all the tea on his new project...

You can watch the trailer for Happy Death Day 2U by clicking below.

Congrats on the movie! We’ve seen it and it’s awesome. Did you suspect a sequel might be on the horizon when the first movie got made?
Thanks! And no way! Once we wrapped the first one, we really had no idea how they would make a sequel!

Did you have any theories about what might happen?
Chris Landon (director) gave us some ideas about what he was thinking but it wasn’t really anything concrete, it wasn’t until we got the script and I was totally blown away. There is no way I could’ve thought it would go the way it does!

How would you explain this movie?
It’s kind of tough to explain because in this one we’re playing around with time in a different dimension. It does pick up right where the first movie ends, the very next second, and we pick up with my roommate Ryan and follow him around for a little bit. Then we understand what’s causing the timeloop, and once we get an idea of that you think you’re settled into the storyline in general, but then there’s a couple of twists that throw everything round and make it a little confusing. Basically Tree has to not only figure out who the killer is, but the killer is also coming after all of us so the stakes are raised, the time is warped and she’s just trying to get back home!

Obviously Tree becomes really fearless when she knows she can’t die. Is there anything you would try if you knew you were invincible?
Definitely! I’ve seen those videos on YouTube where they’re on the edge of a building not connected to anything and the GoPro is pointed down at their feet and they’re just playing with fate. I would definitely do that, that sounds like a lot of fun, but only if I could definitely hit the ground and wake back up in my bed, because there is no way I would do that otherwise!

How do you think your character Carter would’ve handled it if he’d had to go back and relive the same day, dying over and over again?
I feel like if he was in that situation, he would be freaked out beyond all measure. He helps when other people are in need, but he’d definitely freak out.

Is there ever any scary moments on set?
It was always a good time on set. The only time I’d say it was eerie was the hospital scenes where we filmed in an abandoned hospital.. You turn one corner and then there’s us and the camera equipment and everything is fine, but then you go down these dark stairs and there’s creepy lights hanging and weird sounds coming from rooms.

This movie has one of the funniest, most epic slow-motion scenes in it. How was it filming stunts?
I had to dodge a few bullets and things like that, but that slow motion scene was interesting on my part because I was suffering from a little gastroenteritis that day and I was getting picked up by the wire right at my gut and thrown backwards, so the whole time I was trying to hold in the pain, but it adds a comedic look to it. Everyone else is freaking out, but I just look like I’m thinking ‘what the hell is going on?’ (laughs)

If you had the choice, would you rather have the power to go back in time or see into the future?
I would want to go back in time, because if I looked in the future I might see something not that great, but if I mess something up I could go back 60 seconds and fix it!

Happy Death Day 2U is out on February 14.
