Cleanse correctly
With all that extra humidity, grime and sweat hanging around, you might think you need to cleanse more often to keep your complexion clear. Not true; in fact, over-washing your face can have the opposite effect and actually strip your skin leaving it feeling dry and tight. The problem with that is (besides being uncomfortable) your skin might try to overcompensate and produce more oil, which can lead to – you guessed it – breakouts. The trick here is to choose the right cleanser, one that will thoroughly cleanse the skin and pores, but won’t eliminate your skin’s natural moisture. Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser does a comprehensive job of de-gunking pores and dissolving dirt, oil and makeup, while also leaving skin feeling soft and smooth.
Mask regularly
We’re all about a weekly mask situation (hello, self-care selfies) but you might need to switch up your formula as we head into summer. Think about what your skin does in the heat – does it break out? Dry up? Go into oil overdrive – and act accordingly. Clays and acids can help clear up congestion and dead skin cells, while anti-inflammatory honey and aloe vera can calm an angry red complexion. Looking for hydration that won’t feel sticky in 40-degree weather? Formula 10.0.06 Soak Your Face Hydrating Sheet Mask has hyaluronic acid that drenches thirsty skin with lightweight moisture.
Choose the right sunscreen
You know you need to wear sunscreen every single day and that skipping it is just not worth the long-term affects. But what if your sunscreen is making you break out? That just means you’re using the wrong one. Never use body sunscreens on your face, as the formulas are often too thick and oily, and make sure you bin any sunscreen that’s expired.
Look for a sunscreen that says ‘non-comedogenic’, which means that it won’t clog pores, and one that has additional skincare ingredients to help minimise breakouts. Bondi Sands Daily Moisturising SPF50+ Face Sunscreen Lotion offers both UVA and UVB protection (so important!), has calming aloe vera and hydrating vitamin E and is fragrance free (a plus for sensitive skin types). The lightweight lotion absorbs quickly and leaves behind a non-greasy, invisible finish, so it works a treat when used solo or is layered under makeup.
Only apply sunscreen on clean, dry skin and never over makeup or after you’ve been out, as your face likely has some build-up of dirt, pollution and oils on it – a perfect recipe for skin problems. And be sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly every evening to ensure there’s no leftover sunscreen mixing with oil and sweat that your skin produces overnight.
Always ready the label. Follow the directions for use. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Always wear a hat, protective clothing and sunglasses when exposed to the sun. Re-apply frequently.
