“You’re always and never prepared for what’s going to happen, so even if I know what’s going to happen, I try to be as open as possible to being surprised.”
While the cast may have been mostly prepared for their individual scenes, Madison (Lennon/Allison) tells Girlfriend that for the series as a whole, they were all kept in the dark.
“We got maybe the first four episodes in the very beginning, so we didn’t know how this entire thing was going to end; we figured it out maybe a month before we started filming.”
She continues: “Our characters, as well as us, are trying to figure this out, so that was really fun on set because we had a lot of bets going on of like who the killer was and how the whole thing was going to end, and all of us were wrong.
“Except for one, one person figured it out, but everyone else was completely off.”
Of course, fans of the original novel and movie may be hoping the series pays homage to its predecessors. Madison assures us that there are “plenty of Easter Eggs” hidden in the show.
“If you pay enough attention, you will see them, you will find them. Even our crash scene, it very much pays tribute to the original movie, even though we are in Hawaii not North Carolina.”
Sebastian (Johnny) also cryptically reveals that the new cast and crew even made their own Easter Eggs.
“We actually had the opportunity to create some, didn’t we, with the polaroids?” he asks his co-star, Brianne.
“That’s a really minute detail that you’re going to have to look deep for,” the actress says.
“There’s a lot of thought put into the series,” adds Sebastian.
At the same time, Madison explains that ensuring that the show remains “its own thing” was equally as important.
“I think it’s got enough in there that both new fans and old fans will really love.”
One way the show diverts from the original is through the inclusion of twins, Lennon and Allison, played by Madison herself. The characters themselves are wildly different from one another, which the actress enthuses was “a lot of fun”.
“Playing twins was always on my bucket list as an actress. I really enjoyed figuring them out as separate people but also as sisters. And, for me, it was really important to make them feel real and grounded and not necessarily like your stereotypical twins. I really fell in love with both of them.”
As for who she preferred playing, well, it’s a tough call… but Madison has a soft spot for one over the other.
“I loved them both for different reasons, but Lennon was probably the most fun to play just because she’s pretty crazy and pretty much up for everything, so the days that we were Lennon was pretty fun. I love Alison in her own way, she breaks my heart a little bit.”
