Buttne (that’s butt-acne for the uninitiated) is both figuratively and literally a pain in the behind.
So how do you get rid of pimples on your bum?
The first thing to note is that those unsightly red spots on your derriere aren't actually acne but folliculitis.
Here are the main causes behind buttne breakouts
1. Spin classes
Dermatologist Dr Howe told the Daily Mail that the growing popularity of Soul Cycle-style exercise classes has definitely contributed to an increase in buttne.
“The hairs are compressed against the tight material and the bike, which is just a source of friction,” he told the publication.
2. Tight activewear
Yep, unfortunately our beloved, bum-hugging tights are a culprit as they can trap sweat and bacteria against the skin and cause irritation.
3. Sub-par scrubbing
4. Dry skin
Dry skin and constant contact with clothing is a sure fire way to clog up the hair follicles on your booty.
Here's how you can treat butt acne, and prevent it in the future
1. Maintain good hygiene
Wash the area regularly, especially if you're exercising a lot.
"It's best to shower right after a workout so you don't sit around in clothing you've been sweating in that's filled with bacteria," Jaliman told Women’s Health.
Also ensure you wash your hair first and booty last so the suds from your scalp don't wash down and clog your pores.
2. Wear loose clothes
Choose loose, cotton-based bottoms when you can, especially in the summer heat – tight nylon can trap sweat against the skin leading to inflammations. If you can't let go of your leggings, make sure you're sleeping in looser clothes.
3. Be particular with your products
Regular exfoliation is key when it comes to butt acne treatment. Body washes and wipes with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide (Benzac AC Wash $16.99) and salicylic acid (Philosophy Clear Days Ahead $42, Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Pads $15, Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Skin Wash $57) can help remove bacteria and dead cells that could be sitting on your skin’s surface. A sulfur-based cream (Kiehl's Breakout Control Targeted Acne Spot Treatment $46) also works as a great spot treatment overnight, drying up a zits fast.
5. Moisturise regularly
Combat dry skin by moisturising often and opt for a hypo-allergenic lotion without harsh fragrances or chemicals. Thursday Plantation's Tea Tree Hand & Body Lotion ($14) contains 100% pure Australian tea tree oil, known for its antibacterial properties, combined with the nourishing properties of macadamia oil and aloe vera.
6. Stop staying sedentary
If you spend your days behind a desk, try to get up an move around often. Not only does this have major benefits for your physical and mental health but it can also relieve pressure and friction on your downstairs area.
7. Do not pop
Not only will it make it worse, it might also cause scarring.
