Ani's character may have faced a lot of backlash from viewers (so much so that actress Grace Saif quit social media), she was a vital role in the season. In fact, right off the bat, she took over as the narrator, which was previously Hannah Baker's role.
When Hannah first introduces her tapes, she says, "sit back, get a snack." Ani's intro is a little similar. "Get comfortable," she says, "because this might take a while".
ZACH'S PHONE CALL
The first episode is set up so we question everyone about Bryce's disappearance. Zach (Ross Butler) acts incredibly suspicious, calling Bryce all panicked surrounded by a concreted area. However, in the next episode, it focuses on his relationship and Chloe, and doesn't explain the phone call at all.
WELL, fans have connected the phone call to the penultimate episode, where Zach ends up beating the crap out of Bryce on the pier for everything he did to Chloe and breaking his leg at the Homecoming game.
Zach goes back to that concrete pier to see if Bryce was still there, and when he obviously wasn't, calls him in a panic... explaining the phone call from episode one.
TYLER'S SHOOTING HAS SOME VERY SPECIAL CONNECTIONS TO THE REAL WORLD
Unfortunately, Tyler's dangerous plotline in season two to attack his fellow students at the school dance is something that happens in America quite often.
One fan, in particular, noticed that the set designers created Tyler's gun collection to look incredibly similar to the Columbine shooter's collection.
Tyler nearly attacks his school on the same date as Columbine: April 20th.
JAIL TIME IS REAL POSSIBILITY FOR ALL STUDENTS COME SEASON 4
Right now, Tody Padilla (Christian Navarro) is definitely in for it. Not only is he laundering money for his family in Mexico, but he helped get rid of the guns Tyler had at the end of season 2. This season saw a fisherman find them in the finale. They would be riddled with Tony's prints.
But he isn't the only student who is facing some severe consequences. Let us not forget that they all are covering up a major murder to protect Alex Standall (Miles Heizer).
CLAY: Clay will forever be in the thick of all the drama, no matter how hard he tries to avoid it. While he was proven innocent in Bryce's murder, he helped Tony cover-up for Tyler's near-shooting at the end of season 2.
JESSICA: Jessica Davis (Aleisha Boe) was a key witness in Bryce's murder. She saw Alex push him off the dock and drown with his broken leg. She lied to police and everyone else saying she was home in bed when this all occurred.
ALEX: As said above, Alex was the one who killed Bryce. By pushing him off the pier while he was beaten down, he drowned. Alex's own father, the Deputy of police, knows the truth but protects his son.
JUSTIN: Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn) has been dealing drugs on top of his own drug addiction. He also was complicit in getting rid of a gun.
TYLER: Tyler (Devin Druid)
ZACH: While Zach admitted to the police that he thought he killed Bryce, all he was guilty of was battery and assault.
ANI: Throughout the entire season, Ani was narrating. We didn't find out who she was actually speaking to until the finale. Deputy Standall. He knows the truth about who killed Bryce, but decided to believe that it was Monty, not his son. HOWEVER, Winston, the boy who got romantically involved with Monty before his death knows the true whereabouts of Monty on the night of Bryce's murder, and he's out for justice. Ani is the first person he confronts.
