3 common celebrity makeup mistakes and how you can avoid them

It happens to the best of us... unless you read this!

Celebs probably have the most exxy makeup artists in the world, but sometimes stuff gets lost in translation and their perfectly contoured faces end up looking a little iffy. Here are the three most common mistakes and what you need to remember to make sure they’re not lit up the next time the flash goes off – especially when Girlfriend Model Search is in town!

1. Attack of the white powder

Why does Miley have a beard of icing sugar on her face? Wait, you mean, it’s NOT icing sugar? Nope. It’s actually translucent powder, used to mattify her face so she doesn’t look like a shiny wrecking ball in front the cameras. Ironically, one of translucent powder’s main ingredients is silica, which reflects light – that’s why it looks so white – so it’s really important to blend well.

Going easy on the powder. If you don’t want to risk the white shadow, go for a setting powder that’s tinted to match your skin tone, and lightly dust or pat into your face, making sure its applied evenly. Taking a quick selfie with flash to check also helps!

3. Looking peachy

Just peachy – that sounds like something you’d like to be, right? Wrong! Emma Stone thought she wanted peachy, and look what she got – ORANGEY. *Shudder* #greatestfaketanfear

Avoid it by…
Never tan more than one or two shades darker than your normal colour. If you’re pale like Emma, still opt for “light” instead of “medium” for a natural holiday-like glow. If you’re DIY fake tanning, go for a gradual tanner for better colour control. Patch test on a concealable bit of skin or get it done professionally a few days before your event so the colour has time to settle in and fade to a more natural-looking shade.

Lindsay Lohan is gorgeous! But, here she’s committed one of the most common beauty blunders. Can you spot the difference? Her hairline and face are completely different shades!

Avoid it by…
Getting your foundation professionally colour-matched at the beauty counter of Myer or DJs (it’s free!). Picking the right color foundation is notoriously tricky based off packaging alone, so definitely get a second opinion. Also, stop being a neck neglecter. Foundation belongs on your neck too, and if you’re wearing a low cut dress, it goes on décolletage as well. And finally – this is really important, ok – make sure you blend well by using a foundation brush OR do what I do, mix in a bit of moisturiser with your coverage and apply like you would a face cream.
