Nicki Minaj might be a boss b*tch in the music industry, but if there is one woman who was running the game long before her, it was Tracy Chapman.
And Tracy isn’t letting it slide that Nicki sampled one of her most iconic songs, “Baby Can I Hold You” without permission, for her track “Sorry”.
According to TMZ, Tracy says that Nicki and her team reached out multiple times in June 2018 with requests to license “Baby Can I Hold You,” but that she denied them each time.
Nicki wouldn’t take no for an answer and continued to tweet her and ask for approval into August.
Eventually, she released the song “Sorry,” which used a sample of Tracy’s song, regardless of not having her approval.
The Muse notes that Nicki sent a now-deleted tweet the day the track was played, writing, “Sis said no.”
In the lawsuit, Tracy alleges that this is an allusion to her denying her requests on multiple occasions. Tracy’s lawsuit asks for damages be paid and that Nicki and her team be prohibited from re-releasing the song, regardless of it not being included on her new album Queen.
