For some news that could only come out of an app like TikTok in the middle of a global pandemic, underage teens on TikTok are successfully buying alcohol… by dressing themselves up as sweet old ladies.
In a series of videos now unfortunately deleted by TikTok, teens were seen dressing up in cardigans, grey wigs and makeup before shuffling their feet and shakily walking towards bottle shops to give the illusion they’re an old lady. Taking advantage of the need to wear a face mask, one teen hides their face behind it, giving the total impression that they’re just a sweet old granny.
In the clip below, their friends send them off to a bottle shop, only to witness them return to their car with a bag of goodies.
In other TikToks, teens used an assortment of costume jewellery, sunglasses, dry shampoo, head scarfs, wire-rimmed glasses and sandals to create the ultimate disguise.
But, sadly, all of these videos have been removed. According to Insider, TikTok says it vows to remove any content it sees that promotes criminal behaviour, including these TikToks of faux old ladies, because it “offers the purchase, sale, or trade of unlawfully acquired goods.”
“TikTok is a platform for positive, creative self-expression, and keeping our community safe is a top priority,” a TikTok spokesperson told Insider. “Our Community Guidelines make clear what is not acceptable on our platform, and we use a combination of technologies and moderation teams to identify, review and, where appropriate, remove content that violates these guidelines.”
